This is more than New Year&#8217;s in 2011. Going to pray at a shrine or temple during New Year&#8217;s is called <em>hatsumode<\/em> (\u521d\u8a63).<\/p>\n<p>Shiga&#8217;s most popular shrines during New Year&#8217;s and the estimated number of worshippers during the first three days of the 2012 have been announced as follows:<\/p>\n<p>1. <a href=\"https:\/\/photoguide.jp\/pix\/thumbnails.php?album=138\">Taga Taisha Shrine<\/a> (\u591a\u8cc0\u5927\u793e) in <a href=\"https:\/\/photoguide.jp\/txt\/Taga-cho,_Shiga\">Taga<\/a>, next to Hikone, 470,000\u00a0worshippers<br \/>\n2. <a href=\"https:\/\/photoguide.jp\/pix\/thumbnails.php?album=635\">Nagahama Hachimangu Shrine<\/a> (\u9577\u6d5c\u516b\u5e61\u5bae) in <a href=\"https:\/\/photoguide.jp\/txt\/Nagahama,_Shiga\">Nagahama<\/a>, 150,000 worshippers<br \/>\n3. <a href=\"https:\/\/photoguide.jp\/pix\/thumbnails.php?album=188\">Omi Jingu Shrine<\/a> (\u8fd1\u6c5f\u795e\u5bae) in <a href=\"https:\/\/photoguide.jp\/txt\/Otsu,_Shiga\">Otsu<\/a>,\u00a0140,000 worshippers<br \/>\n4. <a href=\"https:\/\/photoguide.jp\/pix\/thumbnails.php?album=577\">Tarobo Shrine<\/a> (\u592a\u90ce\u574a\u5bae) in <a href=\"https:\/\/photoguide.jp\/txt\/Higashiomi,_Shiga\">Higashi-Omi<\/a>, 120,000\u00a0worshippers<br \/>\n5. <a href=\"https:\/\/photoguide.jp\/pix\/thumbnails.php?album=130\">Hiyoshi Taisha Shrine<\/a> (\u65e5\u5409\u5927\u793e) in western Otsu, 100,000 worshippers<\/p>\n<p>As usual, Taga Taisha will see the lion&#8217;s share of worshippers. No doubt, the shrine&#8217;s auspicious name is a major draw. &#8220;Taga&#8221; means many felicitations. Perfect for new year&#8217;s prayers.<\/p>\n<p>And on New Year&#8217;s Eve, Buddhist temples will be ringing in the new year at around midnight. At <a href=\"https:\/\/photoguide.jp\/pix\/thumbnails.php?album=25\">Hikone Castle<\/a>, there is the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/photoguide.jp\/pix\/displayimage.php?album=25&amp;pid=26261\" target=\"_blank\">Time-Keeping Bell<\/a> or Jiho-sho (\u6642\u5831\u9418) which the public can ring from 11:30 pm. The bell is on the way to the tenshu castle tower.
